Copeton to Charters Towers - Oct 05

All packed and on the road by 0830hrs. Heading for warmer clime's, but there is a price to pay for the warmth. Rolled into Moree, stocked up and kept rolling until the Turbo Charge fault light started to flicker, then all the the warning lights started to flicker. Decided to get it checked out as we were only a few clicks out of Moree.

NRMA sent us to the Diesel blokes in town, no fault with the turbo, check with Toyota. Micheal came out and had a look, yeah no sweat just pull the plug off the back of the Alternator and crimp the lugs. She'll be right, no damage done just the alternators not charging 100%.

So off again and will pull things apart in the morning when the engine's cold.

Found a great camp on the Boomi River 5k's south of Mungindi and the Queensland border. coord's just in case "S 29 01 413 E 149 03 988. Sue's getting ready for HAPPY HOUR - BUT__!

This is the price you pay for WARMER CLIME'S - BLOODY FLIES!!

Fixed the Turbo Charger fault and no problems since. But more on it later.
Checked out St George, been there before. About 50 Harley's in town all heading back home after the HOG rally at Finke.

Next camp on the banks of the Balonne River just over the bridge from Surat in the Fish restocking camp area.

Checked out Roma and the BIG RIG; it's actually very small. Checkout the Big Rig info centre and talked to the owner, Peter Keegan, who's family have lived in the area since the 1880's so have a vast amount of local knowledge. As they say speak to the locals, I guess he qualifies as LOCAL. He recommended we check out Mount Moffatt, it's on the beaten track and not too many tourists, just the way we like it. Reckons the Carnarvon gorge is crowded etc.

Next camp Injune camp grounds, a chance to do the laundry, fill up with water before heading to Mt Moffat for a few day's.

No, it's not our tyre 75 year old Cliffy was wresling with when we walked up. He's a local transport operator in Injune. We called in to see if he could repair our awning winder spring. Cliffy stated he's not so sure about welding on a spring.

The welds completed and has not failed yet, and not likely to as I treat it a little more gentle now, not brut force and ignorance.

Restocking the essentials to remote camping in the BUSH!

Another Bushtracker pulled in to the camp ground, they had aslo been in Copeton. Plus another bloke with a camper trailer and 80 series Landcruiser 1992 same as our's. He had also experienced the same Altermator Fault light problem, spent weeks and 100's of $ trying to get it fixed. Apparently there is no electrial diagram in any manual that indicates there is a connection between the fault light and the alternator. Those of you with a Landcruiser please file this piece of information, it will save you heaps.

Thru the cattle plains enroute to Mt Moffatt

Mt Moffatt an indication of things to come.

This is known as the Chimney's, hard limestone caps with erosion down the vertical fractures.

The TOMBS with more than 400 stenciled mofits ( images) . As the name indicates this was once burial chambers for the local aboriginal people.

More stencils and engravings, the rock face is pock marked with small caves and holes used as burial chambers. But sadly by the end of the 20th Century the site had been robbed of all evidence of the elborate mortuary culture.

The LOOKING GLASS.

Local flowers.

MARLONG ARCH - soft precipice sandstone has weathered to create this natural sandstone arch. It's impressive in size.

The join in the arch, hope the ground don't shake, whilst anyone's under it.

LOT'S WIFE - another pillar of precipice sandstone, the last remnant of an extensive bluff.

Lunch at the Head of the Canarvon Creek, you can trip a bucket of water off the East ridge and it would travel down the Carnvon Gorge, and a metre to the South West ridge water travels via the Maronoa River into the mighty Murray - Darling catchment.

Yeah. I get to eat also.

MAHOGANY FOREST - this area is high up on the Consuelo Tableland, these tall stringbarks stretch along the ridge for 2-1/2 k's, there is a distinct demarkation in the vegetation from these majestic trees and then back into low strangly scrub.

View from TOP SHELTER on the Great dividing range. The Roof of Queensland looking south west at Mount Moffatt, the sharp peak in the distance.

Our camp site known as Dargonelly Rock Hole Camping Area. Surprised to see water in it; it's so dry thru the area.

Our camp site, all to our selves. Some folks where leaving when we pulled up.

No manicurist out here dear, you're on your own, flies and all!

Rock pool reflections.

Aptly named CATHEDRAL ROCK; it's massive and stacked up like bricks.

Yep, that's Mt Moffatt.

A day tour to Mt Moffatt and the orginal homestead site, nothing left, plus the gates locked.

Checking the veggies.

Dinner - It's hard living off the land!

Some one's got the keep the fire going. Some folks with a Kedron pulled in late, complaining about the track. I reckon it was okay. Question what's your tyre pressures Oh! about 60 psi. Wow Thats a bit hard for this track suggested he lower them to 24 - 26 on the Van and 20 all round on the vehicle. Meet the Kedron folks again in Injune two day's later and they said the road was great much better ride with lower tyre pressures. By the way this was a shake down trip for the Kedron and they only had the van 10 day's, windows and cupboard doors opening during travels. So back to the factory before heading back to Sydney.

Departing the Park after 4 days battling the FLIES, we were fortunate to have our fly nets.

Sue's new log cabin.

The cabin built way back in the good old day's.

The old and the new, what a difference 70 odd years makes.

Back in Injune for the Rugby semi finals, The Cowboys and Parramata Eels. Getting some flies tied with a cuppachino in-between. Meet Eric and Ursula from the Copteton Rally heading to the Gorge.

Took the senic track via Nuga Nuga Lake, a storm was brewing and on that hard clay if it got wet, we were going to be there a day or two, stuck in it. so __

We moved to higher ground and gravel.

Some tube repairs before I could take off on a ride around the lake. My mate Fordie gave us an old flat rubber hose he had and did not use, it did not work for us either, so it's ended up as a tube liner. Now get thru this lot you rotten 3 corner jacks.

Rocky out crop at Ngar Ngar Lake.

Checked out Springsure a neat town, restocked at Emerald and camped at Sapphire and tried our hand at gem prospecting. Got a couple of blue's but nothing worth cutting.

Clemont is a neat place, this is the rail station.

The pub is the most prominent building in town.

All the above are railway carriages painted with scene of activities in the local area, very impressive. Right opposite the pub.

Our camp site at Tony and Margs place, Bonnie Doon Charters Towers. Neat town, had the vehicle serviced and checked over before hitting the Development road to Weipa, plus had a UHF radio installed.

Day break at Bonnie Doon. Tony and Marg were at Copeton also and had just arrived home after 5 months on the road and still unpacking their BT. They put on a great BBQ with lot's of their local friends whom had not seen or heard about their trip yet. It was a great evening, and excellent food.

On to the next BLOG our travels Charters Towers to Weipa via Lakefield National Park.

Cheers
